Paper on £1m annual efficiency savings presented to Atlanta Fire and Rescue Conference

Chief Fire Officer John Bonney from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service delivered a paper to the Fire-Rescue International Conference in Atlanta in August.

In the paper, titled 'Innovation in the UK', he called upon fire and rescue chiefs to 'question the systems we use to run our departments and their real costs'. He gave an example of how a review of the service's crewing system, the means by which its 13 whole time fire stations are staffed led to cashable efficiency saving in excess of £1.4m per annum to be identified. Initally this opportunity has been used to remove fire fighters from the frontline and deliver a programme of community fire safety without any compromise in the service's ability to respond to fires.
