Our services to Fire & Rescue

We tailor our approach to individual clients and their objectives. The majority of our work has been in connection with incident response (including both control rooms and deployment of appliances) although we have also undertaken analysis in relation to senior officer numbers, risk mapping and proving the benefits of community safety initiatives.

Typically there are three key stages:

Baseline: where are you now?
Before proposing change, an accurate diagnosis of the opportunities is vital. Our  analytical tools and experience in working with both urban and more rural fire and rescue services enables us to process the right data for a full picture.

Handling the demand: what are the options?
The baseline information is input to a simulator to enable a range of what-if? scenarios to be accurarely quantified. We can determine the consequences and costs of, say, adjusting performance targets, the number and categories of appliances and fire fighters and changes in mobilising locations.

Designing flexible crewing solutions
A key output from simulation is the optimal profile of resource through the week. We are able to work with management and staff to develop shift patterns and rosters that meet as closely as possible this resource profile, taking into account business need and work-life balance of fire fighters and staff. We can develop flexible crewing arrangements that enable more efficient management of abstraction.

Technologies

We have integrated a suite of analytical tools to underpin our approach:

• Incident Analyser – transforming data held on operational systems into meaningful management information

• Fire Incident Response Simulator (FIRS) accurately mimics the incident response processes of fire and rescue services for the purposes of scenario testing in areas such as station closure, appliance mix (type, location and fleet size) and balance of retained / wholetime resources

• Fire Crewing Model (FCM) - to develop and test alternative flexible crewing mechanisms

• Call Profiler - to optimise resources in control rooms

• XIMES – for the design of shift patterns and rosters

We combine an in-depth knowledge of the needs of fire and rescue services, process expertise and bespoke software to help align resources with demand. Getting the right level and type of resources, deployed at the right time, improves performance and public confidence, boosts morale and job satisfaction and saves money.
